* expands the entire tree from top to bottom.

+ expands the currently selected node, if possible

- collapses the currently selected node, if possible

right-arrow expands currently selected node, if it has child nodes and is
collapse.  if it has child nodes and it's expanded it moves the selection
from the current node to the first child node.  if no child nodes, it does
nothing.

left-arrow collapses the currently selected node, if it has children and is
expanded.  if it has child and is collapsed it moves the selection from the
current node to its parent node, if it exists.  if there are no child nodes,
or there are child nodes, but the item is collapsed and there there is no
parent node then it does nothing.
