In most cases, a tweaking tool will do the job for you but in general,
I have never had any problems with changing registry settings, just
make sure you remember the changes. XP has a rollback feature so
if something does go wrong, you can always rollback.

you might also want to try the infamous tweakUI, somewhat basic but
still good.
