James, I'd like to clarify your statements here.

I believe a clear distinction between graphic design and web design must be
made.

I think you are correct if you are saying that there is an apparent conflict
between traditional graphic design and the fairly new area of web design.

Web design is about bringing together and arranging different information
technologies so as to present that information for human understanding and
use.

Graphic design is often a very close and important aspect of web design but
is not completely tied to web design. For instance, aural web browsing is
indeed a needed and growing topic for web designers. Graphic design is
useful but not always -it is strictly visual.
