Alternatively - just convert the grayscale to an alpha matte and use that with a solid color - i.e. green.

<tip: photoshop and alpha> if using targa (TGA) format - this is NOT reliable under photoshop 7 - alpha mattes should be avoided at all costs! Alpha matte is photoshop specific in this version, and not industry standard. Partially fixed to bring compatibility in 7.01 - but still not 100% If used - you will have to rebuild your matte from scratch. Not fun... esp. at 2am! </tip>

you could put a solid color layer on top of it and then adjust that layer's blending. i can't remember the correct word for this, but it's the drop down list next to opacity. try 'screen'.

you could also the channel mixer. Image > Adjust > Channel Mixer
