Interesting approach, but then you are locked into that palette and you 
don't have too much flexibility.

Another method for doing this would be to use a Gradient Map adjustment
layer.  Click on that little light/dark circle in the Layers palette and
select Gradient Map.  Among the many benefits, the adjustment layer can be
masked, you can alter the gradient map at any time, or put new layers
above or below it.

(If your image is truly greyscale you'll probably need to change the mode 
to RGB to use the gradient map effectively.)
