[thelist] Accessing selected text within a textarea

I'm working on an administrator page for a site where I'd like to be able to
access a block of text within a textarea that a user has highlighted.

Unfortunately, all of my reference books are at work, and I'm snowed in at
home.  I'm trying to find it online without a whole lot of success.

(for browser compatibility, I'm looking at versions 5+)
