Unless your contract specifically stated that a "made by" link is OK, the client
is correct. They have no obligation to advertise for you. EG I refused delivery
of a new car with the dealer's ad sticker, since it was not a prerequisite for
buying the car, nor was I being compensated for the same.

If the client doesn't mind and it fits the design nicely, then go ahead.
Otherwise scrap it. It's certainly not worth a confrontation.
