[thelist] Use of <select> elements for navigation

Thanks to Ron and Kristof for your helpful replies. I have decided to avoid
the dropdowns for now but I am still not convinced that they are always a
bad idea. As long as they will function with or without client-side
scripting and their intended purpose is clear, I think there is a place for
them.
