Interesting concept. Seemed to work for me.
Mozilla 1.3.1
Mac OS X 10.2.6

I did notice that it can take six or seven hard refreshed to get the
background to change. Sometimes it would take only one, but more times
then not it would take at least 4. Maybe add something in that checks the
current color scheme and enforces that that one is not selected.
