Another thing I would suggest is to subscribe to php|architect magazine:

Subject: [thelist] PHP book for the wealth-challenged

I'm a hobbyist web developer and poor college student trying to develop
a
database-driven website with MySQL and PHP. As such, I'm looking for
recommendations for a book that will teach me the basics (and
not-so-basics).
I've seen the Wrox books (Beginning PHP, Professional PHP) and the
O'Reilly
book (Programming PHP), but I can't decide which one to spend my
hard-earned
cash on.

Has anyone out there used both? Which was better? Or anyone had a good
experience with one or the other?
