You're right and I have found no method of compression that does any
better.

Here at my ad agency, we use to use a lot of CD's and archive by date
or project or subject matter (whichever applies). Now, we use DVD's to
do the same thing. The media has gotten pretty cheap, so it makes
sense. We also have a SAN that we use to store things while they are
in use. That probably doesn't make sense for personal use. However,
hard drives are pretty cheap these days. You could get a couple of
120GB drives for about $250 total and devote them to holding all of
your images.

Of course, the next problem is managing all those images and finding
the one you want when you want it. That's where software comes in.
