I'm surprised no-one so far has mentioned the IBM Thinkpad series. 
Specifically the T-40. I could go into all the details, but all I'll say is 
my brother just bought one and I got to play with it for a month, and it's 
lovely.

One of the best features for me was the battery life. With an additional 
battery that fits into the CD-ROM bay, battery life was amazing. We took a 
four day trip, and used it 2-3 hours a day to edit digital photos, and only 
needed to recharge once.

It's definitely not a 17" display though, but the screen was extremely 
clear and crisp. Looked better than my 19" Dell CRT actually. I think 
that's the only criterion on your wishlist that it doesn't meet.
