:
: this is consistent with my recent experience with a client that needed to
: buy mssql2k as well.
:
: also, you can save yourself a bundle by doing the following:
:
: a) don't buy it direct from microsoft. there are a
: ton of sources from other vendors who have bought
: licenses in bulk and sell them at deeply discounted
: rates.
:
: b) only buy the enterprise version if you actually
: need the features it provides. most web apps do
: not.

I agree with Jeff on the first point - there are plenty of places that'll
sell you licences at a competitive discount to MS RRP pricing.

Additionally, as mentioned to Joshua offlist, if this is for development
purposes, then getting your company to subscribe to the MS Action Pack is
only $299/year (in the US anyway). If you don't have MSDN Subscription or
similar, then this is very good value:

You get:
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server
Microsoft SQL Server 2000
Microsoft Small Business Server 2000
Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000
Microsoft Mobile Information Server 2002
Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 200
Microsoft Windows XP Professional (10x licences)
Microsoft Office XP Professional (10x licences)
Microsoft FrontPage 2002 (10x licences)
Microsoft Outlook 2002 (10x licences)
Microsoft MapPoint 2002 (10x licences)
Microsoft Visio 2002 SR1 Professional (10x licences)
Microsoft Project 2002 Professional (10x licences)
Microsoft Publisher 2002 (10x licences)

Cheers
