I think it is necessary.
I don't know about web trends, but how a tool based on log files could
know that you clicked an external site ?!?..
The only thing it would know is that the last page where the visitor
was, is the page where are the links, but that's all..
So a redirect page is good to know exactly where does the link point to,
and store that in a database.

Is it me or is this really stupid? Shouldn't web trends be able to track
that the above HREF was an exit link? I'm not up to speed on web trends
yet but I know its fairly robust.
