Dear All
The members of evolt's Steering Group are delighted to announce that
their positions are all available for election.
Steering is made up of 2 representatives from each of evolt.org's
working groups:
* Content: http://lists.evolt.org/mailman/listinfo/content
* Design/Development: http://lists.evolt.org/mailman/listinfo/desdev
* Sysadmin: http://lists.evolt.org/mailman/listinfo/sysadmin
* Marketing: http://lists.evolt.org/mailman/listinfo/marketing
* Finance: http://lists.evolt.org/mailman/listinfo/finance
WHAT DOES STEERING DO?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Steering's job is to take decisions on day-to-day matters that cross
multiple groups (for example choosing a hosting provider would concern
desdev, sysadmin and finance).
Steering is (in theory) different from theforum in that theforum's role
is setting policy, priorities and direction, not executing it. In the
above example, this would mean defining whether being on an OSS
platform is important, and what other things are less important than
hosting and could be dropped if necessary.
(Admittedly, it hasn't always worked out like this over the past year
and a bit - a fair number of executive decisions have been brought to
theforum which may not have needed to. It will be up to the new
Steering members to change this, or not.)
WHAT THE JOB ENTAILS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Steering members don't need to be 'the' key person in their group, but
they do need to accurately represent their group to other groups' reps.
Being good at seeing other peoples' points of view and reaching
agreements that other people can live with is a useful skill.
WHAT THE COMMITMENT MEANS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Steering membership is for one year only, but members should make best
efforts to be committed for that time. RealLife(tm) can always
intervene, but if you're going to stand, you'll probably not have any
major life upheavals actually *planned* for the year.
It doesn't take that much time - much, much less than membership of the
working groups (particularly content and desdev) so you could do the
job while being busy - but it would be difficult to be effective if you
know you're going to be uncontactable for long periods.
HOW TO STAND
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Each working group elects its own reps. Therefore, you'll need to be a
member of a working group to stand to represent it. How each group
wants to pick its members is entirely up to it, provided it's free and
fair, and there's a mailing list archive that records the fact.
You should also be a member of theforum:

TIMESCALES
~~~~~~~~~~~
The new Steering will take over on 1st December - in time for the
evolt.org anniversary on the 14th. All groups need to have selected
their reps not later than 23rd November.
The current Steering members have been in post for over 12 months
(nostrum culpamus), but this shouldn't happen in future, so the next
elections will be in November 2004 (/me marks iCal).
Any questions? Talk about it on theforum.
Cheers
Martin
