the graphic designer required the content section colour to stretch

100% on an absolutely positioned element in IE gives the element a  
width of 100% of the browser window - hence the scroll on two of the 
"choose a course" pages. I brought this up with the graphic designer who 
replied: "that's ok"....(.heavy sigh..).
Any ideas for a (non js) workaround?
