Hey folks, thanks so much for the help. I read everybody's replies and will
explore some more, but for now, Brian's reply:

"If you have no index.htm, index.html, default.asp, or default.cfm,
index.php will be deafulted as yoursite.com/"

seemed the easiest to try first, and it worked perfect in my case!
