Yes, and no.

To test some things, I need to have a multitude of servers. I can run a
couple of VMWare hosted machines on my laptop (because I have two internal
drives, plus an external USB drive), but if I need more, then I need a
decent machine with a decent number of drives.

I have one box at home, that's a 2 x 866 MHz P3 + 1.5 GB of RAM + 4 HDDs. I
can run 4 OSes simultaneously on it. Which is necessary if you want to test
a scenario with say: 1 webserver, a separate DB server, a separate AD
server, and a separate COM+ server. You can't do that on a laptop.
