Andrew,

If you are making a simple gradient from one color to another, simply save
as a low quality JPG (ie, 0 or 10) and your filesize will be very small and
there won't be any highly visible lines.

If you are fading an image, saving as JPG will still be the solution, but
you'll need to save at a higher quality, such as 50, 60 or 70.
