Hi all,

For those interested in .NET development, .NET v2 (Whidbey) Beta 1 has just
been announced at TechEd in Europe. In addition, a number of new VS versions
(under the "Express" title) have been announced. You can download the beta 1
express editions (Web Developer, VB.NET, C#, J#, C++) now from:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/express/
(note: Passport required, and there is a registration page)

In addition, you can download a beta of the next version of SQL Server
(Yukon) titled SQL Server Yukon Express. SQL Server Yukon Express is similar
to the existing MSDE, however:
a) Workload governor removed.
b) Max database size increased to 4GB
c) Single Proc Only
d) Max Memory 1GB
e) Graphical management tools included (Express Manager)
f) XML support will be included, but not in the current Beta 1 - it will be
available as an additional download shortly.
g) support for "xcopy" deployment (no need to run sp_detach_db and
sp_attach_db)
h) support for up to 50 instances (I haven't confirmed this, but someone
blogged it)

SQL Server Yukon Express Beta 1 is designed to work with VS.NET 2005
(Whidbey) Beta 1 (either the Express versions, or the full versions).

In addition to the Express titles, new collaboration and modelling tools
have also been announced (under the title "Team System"). There are a number
of different components. Those with an MSDN subscription will be able to
access the beta versions of Team System.

Cheers
Ken
