Sometimes, it's the only way to get a design the way I want it to look with
slicing it up after designing it through your favorite local graphics
program.

If there are "heavy" pieces of the slicing, you can always go back to that
specific piece and reduce the image quality until you reach a desired
quality for the size of the piece.

Slicing up images invokes the obvious; tables. Or! if you slice it up a
certain way, you can shove it back together using CSS, which is the
preferred method of most.
