I run OS X (it hasn't been called System anything since System 7, by the
way) on a G3 iMac. If you have a beige G3, either install Jaguar (10.2),
which is supported, or use XPostFacto[0] to install Panther (10.3),
which isn't officially supported. Check Apple History[1] to find out
what OS your machine will run.

Blue & White G3s will run Panther without any hackery.
