If, by chance, you are networking Macs (I can't access the first post anymore) in this way, they are smart enough to recgonize and sue a regular ethernet cable as a cross-over cable, eliminating the need to buy another cable.  I am not sure if PCs are capable of this, but I somehow doubt it.

Apple also has networking with Firewire in the works:
