I would start by asking to see what agreements exist in writing. Express it
in a friendly way, if you want eventual cooperation.

This is a logical thing. As new owener, your friend may or may not be bound
by the agreements (take any docs they give you to a lawyer), but it will
show you where they are at. If agreements SPECIFY rights to the site haven't
been transfered, then they haven't.
