[thelist] odd dropdown behaviour in IE on winXP sp2

FWIW, the disappearing hint doesn't just happen on XP SP2. I
believe that's just another odd characteristic of the HTML select
element in IE.

Tearing hair here, could do with some more pairs of eyes to identify the

problem.

http://www.workalone.co.uk/notes/dandy/edit4.htm has a form with
dropdowns and uses the :hover on a div to "appear" a span with helpful
form filling hints.

works fine in Firefox.

to create the same effect in IE I've used the whatever:hover behaviour
which works fine too.

However on the dropdowns the hint disappears as soon as you go into the

list. further investigation shows that in IE6.0 on winXP SP2 not only
does the hover disappear, but the first option highlighted is
automatically selected.

Now that's not quite what I wanted - you can select another option, but

you no longer have a point of reference to what the original selection
was.

can anyone else confirm that what I'm seeing is happening too? (try
going
around the outside of the dropdown box and selecting an option further
down)

can anyone suggest reasons why this might be happening?

TIA

Tony
