There's a much lighter extension, SingleWindow that does that.  I use 
tabbrowser ext without any apparent slowdown.  But I tried SingleWindow 
first and it worked fine (tabbrowser ext just had some nice extras).  
Reviews say that SW doesn't like OSX though...
