Sawmill, the log analyser, offers in its docs a Javascript 'solution', which
requests a non-existant image, with http get parameters attached, aka
'resolution.gif?h=1280&w=800&d=32'
You can then parse your log files for the 404 - of course, if you use
Sawmill, it does this for you.
