No, I don't think that's required.

Go to the signatures section. Create your new signature, and use the Image
button to insert your image.

When composing your mail, choose HTML format. Do not use Rich Text (because
usually Exchange administrators have the Exchange box configured to convert
Rich Text emails that are sent outside the Exchange org to HTML mail, and the
image is lost).

I will send a test to you offlist (the list doesn't accept HTML mail). I've
just done some testing myself, and I can send an email containing an image to
my Gmail account.
