I am a fan of Adobe and their efforts regarding Acrobat. However, my faith
in them slips a bit more every time they release a new version of Acrobat
Reader. Here's a list of reasons:
1. What once was quick is now slow. It used to be that the Reader would
open a file almost instantly. Now, there is a mandatory pause of at least
30 seconds to open the first file. Even more if viewing it within IE.
2. Huge downloads. Why does a download of a reader application need to be
so god-awful huge? What a waste of time.
3. Automatic updates. While the updates are a nuisance with Reader,
there's another application from Adobe where they got it ALL WRONG. Yes,
I'm talking about Photoshop. Better than 50% of the time, when Photoshop
updates it destroys my settings and reverts them back to defaults.
Completely unacceptable.
4. Version 6. Three words: What the heck? Suddenly, I'm seeing all sorts
of stupid errors with files that otherwise worked perfectly with earlier
versions. Error prompts about missing indexes... total crap.
5. System Lockups. I still don't know why the entire system grinds to a
halt when Acrobat Reader loads up. Completely asinine.
Bottom line, I wish they'd roll the clock back and give us a reader that is
under 200k and that opens up nearly instantly for most plain-jane files. I
don't mind it taking a bit of time to open up "advanced" stuff, but don't
lock up my system in the process, and please, please allow me to start
reading/scrolling the document while those advanced features are loading.
