[thelist] www prefix is it necessary?

my experience tells me that sites will not always work without the www.
It's obviously some shonky dns thing (feel free to chime-in w exact 
technical details here) but I have visited several sites where trying 
the url without the www gets me a 'site not found' message.

my 2c anyway....
