I'm broadly in agreement with much of what has been said, but it's a
really odd question.

What terms are you measuring success in? Is a successful site one with
lots of visitors, or one which provides an absolutely appropriate
response to a specific group of users needs, or is it a site which
garners approval by your peers? There are different criteria for the
success of any given site, and part of the job of web designers (I'd
contend) is to try and find out from the client what those criteria
are.

Any answer to this question is going to be needed to be given with huge
caveats.
