[thelist] RE: Transition from Print to Web

I have no idea why anyone would hire a creative
director who had no experience in web site design,
unless web work is a minor and tiny part of the job.

If so, the person should just leave the web people
alone, and not impose the totally alien principles of
print media upon the web site.

Print media has plenty of its own stubborn
insufficiencies, but to think that a print person
could have much to say about the very different web
realm seems quite bizarre to me.

Web users don't read word for word, they skim text.

Web users don't flip pages like in a magazine, they
use site search, links, etc. to navigate with little
real direction from the site author.

Web users generally feel that all ads are intrusive
and tend to debase the credibility of a site.

Importing print design and print text principles into
web sites has proven a disaster.

I'm not familiar with the Zeldman book, but I tend to
admire Zeldman.

"Designing Web Usability" by Jakob Nielsen would be
where I would start, then on to his "Homepage
Usability" book with Marie Tahir.
