To play devil's advocate for a second, everyone is always trying to define
what the web is "supposed to be". Thing is, print design has been around,
oh since the invention of the printing press let's say (although it's
actually longer than that). But web design? 10 years as a mainstream industry?

I'd say these "supposed to be's" are still being defined. And the web is
different things to different people.
