It is true that it tends to bloat gif's more than necessary, but its not 
nearly as bad as you describe. However it is true that it tends to bloat the 
to about 200% of the necessary size (the same image exported as gif from MM 
fireworks is about 80k, from imagemagick about 160-170k).

Where imagemagick excels is photo resizing and manipulation, it performs a 
lot better than the GD lib.
