I see no one has responded to your question.  I don't have any specific
advise.  However, I do have some ideas regarding debugging.

1) Do you get this sort of lag with any <cfhttp> call?

2) Do you get this sort of lag both with and without the
   associated XML parsing?

3) Do you get this sort of lag both with and without the
   associated XML searching?

A permutation of the configurations above will yield the source of your
slowness.
