I actually had a chance to test it a few hours after I sent my message
(whereas normal people would test BEFORE sending). According to
various sites I looked up before I sent, focus() is valid on an
option. However, it didn't do anything in Firefox.

I think it's a bug. I can't see any rationale for the behavior
displayed. A user would surely assume that focus is on the option
selected. I would suggest filing the bug.
