Java object to do this.  I merely pointed out that in a local intranet
environment (or with the proper domain-specific security allowances) it
is perfectly possible to do this with Javascript.

Correct. This is impossible to do with only Javascript and would be a 
major security flaw if it were possible. Javascript cannot access your 
local file system.
