The lack of a file extension on "news" (the PHP file) made it be interpreted as a directory. It also explains why images weren't showing (which I'd noticed, but dismissed, because I'd morphed into a custard). This was fixed by not using relative paths for images / external CSS files. Thanks for that, saved me a lot of hair-pulling!
