[thelist] Java: Which version?

I'm not a java programmer. I just use it for this and that. I now find 
myself at the sun.com website facing a dizzying array of flavours of java. 
They've got more than the Second Cup!

I don't want to serve, or do serious coding in java. I know know what a 
bean is, nor do I wish to explore servlets. I want to be able to run java 
apps, and occasionally to compile them.

Which version do I want?
