Hi Chris,
I totally agree that this is functionality that should be handled on  
the server side but unfortunately the brief is to deploy this to end  
users who won't have access to any server side trickery. As such I'm  
pretty much stuck with attempting to script this on the client side.  
In doing so any end user can also distribute these pages via CD-ROM  
(for example) and have the pages still work. Users without JS will  
simply see the noscript content telling them about the limited  
functionality of the page they are viewing.
