It may seem facile to suggest this, but could you perhaps shorten the link
text itself? If you need to show the text to differentiate it from other
links (such as to show a filename), could you just show the significant
portion of the filename?
For example, you might have the date on the end:

a_really_long_file_name_which_was_produced_on_20050901.html
a_really_long_file_name_which_was_produced_on_20050902.html
a_really_long_file_name_which_was_produced_on_20050903.html

You could shorten this to
a_really--_20050901.html

This wouldn't really work for user-generated filenames, but there again you
could perhaps impose a limit.
