I remember Kurt Russell using it in a much earlier film. Check out RFC3092,
Etymology of "Foo".  http://rfc.net/rfc3092.html

Supposedly originating from Furchtbar, German for terrible.  Usage was
popular in the second world war, for example, one of various acronyms used
on the notes of hospital patients.
