Have you tried the stand-alone version of the calendar, Sunbird?  I have 
it set up to launch on start-up.

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird.html

Also, you can set the Thunderbird calendar to launch on start-up using:

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" |-mail -calendar|
