Another option, Do not use counters at all. 1. They make the site look amaeteurish (most of the time). 2. They can be easily faked (by auto refreshing and IFRAME for instance). You cannot simply rely on counters. Better use some application that analyzes server logs and generates statistics web log expert [1] is an excellent tool for off-line processing of web logs.
