IIRC, (and if you scroll down far enough in the Wikipedia article you
cited 
you'll see it covered more thoroughly), the main concerns were more over
the 
increased opportunities for spoofing, phishing, and pseudo-squatting
that 
come from use of 'unexpected' and/or mixed character set URIs.
