[thelist] line/text returns in IE 5.2 and Safari on Mac

Might help if you show us a URL.

As for a solution that will work in other browsers you have to
remember that different users will have diffferent screen, font and
font size settings so there has to be a degree of letting go and
accepting that it will not look the same on everyones browser.
