I'd suggest using xhtml 1.0, as it will be more code-ready for the future.

Other's may disagree, saying that it's not necessary.  And this is true. 
  You can have a document that is xhtml strict, but run it as html 4 
strict, which will validate because xhtml is "more" strict than html4 
strict is.
