While I am not familiar with the ins and outs of US copyright law, the rationale
behind displaying a range of years is that there are a number of different "first
publication/creation dates" involved in a web site.

For example typographical layout, design, images, as well as the actual content
may all have different dates........

For content on different pages  title attribute, meta tags or Dublin core tags can offer
specific dates........
