Thanks very much to everyone who replied!

I contacted Dean Mah, the guy who runs thelist and also incidentally a
prince amongst men. With astonishing speed he replaced all occurrences
of my client's domain name with "example", so all that's left to do is
wait till it fades out of the Google index. As said in Blackadder, may
the heavens rain down radiant jewels and sweet meats upon him!
(Although really, that sounds more like a punishment rather than
gratitude).

Although I hadn't actually said anything untoward about the client, I
think they were unenthused with the idea of being associated with
incompetence - bad for their image. So this was a sharp lesson in
professionalism for me, and hopefully a reminder to everyone else not
to be such an idiot!
