[thelist] dropdown menu question

hi...

i'm looking for a free/open source jscript/app for creating drop down menus
that can collapse..

ie:
 foo
   bird
   bird2
   bird3
 abc
  cat
  dog
  mouse

i'd like to be able and select 'foo' and have

 foo
   bird
   bird2
   bird3
 abc

be displayed, with abc hiding the underlying submenus. i'd also like to
leave the submenus under foo still be displayed, with the item that was
selected, highlighted...

similarly, if i select abc, only foo is displayed, along with the
information under 'abc'...

anyone have any suggestions as to where to find a script to do this...

i've been searching google and haven't come across a free one yet...
